Since 2012 Lady Vendredi has spawned performance art gigs that toured gay clubs in East London, Italy, Tokyo and Latitude Festival and the Southbank Centre. I've co-written with Electroclash pionieer Larry Tee, performed with Princess Superstar and supported Peaches and Charli XCX. In 2015 Lady Vendredi released her debut single and starred in her own ritual theatre show at The Roundhouse in London produced by MAS Productions. In 2016 she will release a 12 inch EP inspired by Giallo soundtracks and pioneering 70s synth music.
The process of writing the music for the live shows begins from an embodiment of Haitian traditional rhythms. MAS have been studying with a Haitian Vodou dance teacher - Zsuzsa Parrag for the last 2 years, learning the dances that have influenced the tracks including the Yanvalou, the Ibo and Petwo. Working with her, we aim for an embodimentof the rhythms, capturing the grooves internally. The Haitian rhythms correlate with specific spirits (syncretic with West African and African Diaspora spiritual systems including Candomble, Santeria, Vodun, Yoruba and Igbo traditional religions) which have strong movement qualities and their own personal mythologies which all go into the musical and lyrical content. We also take influences from the narratives and mythologies MAS productions have been creating for the theatrical works, and contemporary music styles. The end result is a unique blend of global bass, traditional rhythms, jazz, new music, rap, electronica with a mythic undertone and an ecstatic yearning.
